About Us

Boğaziçi University Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies (iklimBU) was officially founded in 2014. Including researchers from different disciplines such as Physics, Environmental Sciences, Economics, Geography, and Tourism, the iklimBU conducts interdisciplinary researches about the impacts of climate change and policies on the geography we live in and on neighboring regions such as Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and Central Asia and carries out supportive studies for the implementation of these researches as well.

iklimBU aims to provide insight into the impacts and risks of climate change on the geography we live in and on neighboring countries located in the Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East, and Central Asia and to support policy makers with these foresights by making contribution to the solution proposals in areas such as renewable energy, emission reductions, adaptation in agriculture, and potential impact studies of extreme climate events.

iklimBU is also responsible for the domains of Central Asia, the MENA, and Australasia under the International Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX). iklimBU produces high-resolution regional climate model outputs to assess how it will change the future of the climate in the regions such as Central Asia, the MENA, Australasia, the Mediterranean, Turkey, Cyprus, and their sub-regions. Furthermore, these climate outputs are used to investigate the impacts of climate changed-induces extreme events on agriculture, tourism, water resources, drought, socio-economic factors such as migration.

In addition to all these, iklimBU carries out activities to train master and doctoral students, to develop joint projects on climate change and policies in national and international platforms by promoting interdisciplinary research activities and establishing collaborations, to organize informative trainings on relevant units of public and private sectors, to make contribution to the literature through the establishment of a sustainable information platform on climate change and climate change risks. Besides, the creation of an up-to-date database on climate change and policies, the use of the database in interdisciplinary research, the sharing of information with relevant institutions and individuals through conferences and/or seminars, and the transformation of information into publications are among the ongoing activities of the iklimBU.

OUR HISTORY

ORIENTATION TO CLIMATE MODELING RESEARCH-

2006

His knowledge of both statistical methods and thermodynamics and fluid dynamics methods led Levent KURNAZ to the field of climate modeling. After 2006, KURNAZ focused on climate change studies and Hamza ALTINSOY, Tuğba ÖZTÜRK and Şükrü Murat CEBECİ were the first students to continue their PhD studies and work in the field of climate change. In the following years, Tufan TURP, Nazan AN and Kamil ÇÖLLÜ participated to the students who completed their master's degree in the field of climate and started their PhD.

REGCM4.0

ICTP, Italy, 2010

As expected, it takes a long time to start working in a new field, even if you have basic knowledge. Theregore, after completing our infrastructure shortages, we learned about climate modeling in two intensive two-week workshops with researchers from ICTP (Trieste, Italy). We also attended ICTP trainings for two weeks to learn about the recently released regional climate model RegCM4.0. After the trainings, a team emerged that could work on the global and regional climate model and carry out studies on the effects of climate change. From this team, Hamza ALTINSOY and Tuğba ÖZTÜRK have completed their PhD and Tufan TURP and Nazan AN are about to complete their PhD. Kamil ÇÖLLÜ started to work on his doctoral thesis. Master and PhD students continue to participate in the group, and the team expands and maintains its sustainability.

CORDEX

2010

CORDEX was creating a system that determines regional coordinates and evaluates these regional model outputs collectively. Although Turkey is at the intersection of many regions, there is no CORDEX region that models us in a meaningful way. We took responsibility for the Central Asia region and we are still responsible for that region within the CORDEX project.

IPCC

2012

Our first article was published in Climate Research Journal in 2012 (https://doi.org/10.3354/cr01082). The article Simulation of temperature and precipitation climatology for the Central Asia CORDEX domain using RegCM 4.0 was included in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) as the first regional climate modeling study covering the entire Central Asia region.

İKLİMBU

2014

In 2014, Boğaziçi University Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies (İklimBU) was officially established with the support of academicians. Together with Levent KURNAZ, Nazan AN, Tufan TURP and Tuğba ÖZTÜRK played an active role in the establishment of the center. İklimBU is an institution where graduate and doctorate students and researchers from different disciplines such as Physics, Environmental Sciences, Economics, Geography, Tourism and Educational Sciences work together. It continues its studies as an institution that conducts interdisciplinary researches on the impacts of climate change and policies, and supports the implementation of these surveys in neighboring regions such as Eastern Mediterranean, Middle East and Central Asia.
